The Henry Ford Medical Group Division of Hospice and Palliative Medicine is seeking a psychologist to join the interdisciplinary palliative medicine inpatient consult service at Henry Ford Hospital.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assess, diagnosis, and address emotional, psychological, cognitive and social issues that may affect quality of life for seriously ill patients receiving palliative medicine consultation in the hospital and their families.
  • Support decision-making around serious illness and end-of-life decisions.
  • Help interpret psychological distress and its effect on patient quality of life and decision-making.
  • Participate in family meetings with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Engage interested patients with legacy and meaning-centered work.
  • Screen for substance use disorders and facilitate treatment.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to manage substance use risk, particularly for patients with co-occurring pain related to serious illness.
  • Attend daily interdisciplinary palliative team meeting and share important psychological, emotional, cognitive, and social issues impacting patient quality of life and the care plan.
  • Assist with developing and leading programs to help palliative medicine team members engage in self-reflection, emotional processing, and self-care.
  • Through structured activities and embedded in daily work, provide education on the psychologic aspects of palliative care to palliative care fellows, rotating learners, and team members.

Requirements:

  • PhD or PsyD in Clinical or Health Psychology from an APA or CPA accredited program and at least 1-year post-doc experience. Must be fully licensed psychologist or licensed psychologist eligible.  
  • Skill and experience in providing clinical psychological services to patients with serious medical illness, mental health, substance use, and/or developmental disorders and systems-based perspective that includes caregivers.
  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of the scientific methods used in psychology; the social, behavioral, developmental, and biological sources of normal and pathological behavior, psychopathology, behavior change, and psychotherapy, particularly in the medical context. Knowledge of state and federal laws and legal requirements for practice.
